Covid update from Kovalam

About one in ten of Kovalam’s adult population now has Covid and there are no hospital beds for them, oxygen supplies are very low and there’s no vaccine.

We’ve set up the Venkat Trust Covid Emergency Programme to help Kovalam through the pandemic. At last – thankfully – Tamil Nadu is in total lockdown but with this comes the worry of not being able to work which means no money coming in for families’ food. We’re operating a mobile Food Bank using the Venkat Trust school bus which will take large bags of rice and curry ingredients to pick up points around the village for all those in need. Strict social distancing will be enforced and our helpers will be behind portable Perspex screens. A Help telephone number is available for those needing our assistance, particularly Covid affected families, with the cost of medicines, transport to out-patients etc. as well as food. Posters with this information and Covid precautions have been put up around the village. A loudspeaker car has also been advising people of the importance of social distancing and wearing masks.
